On this cold and blustery day, I crossed the Great Smoky Mountains. The wintry weather and hoarfrost greatly enhanced the “smokiness.” At the road’s summit I found myriad long views and virtually no other people – just the way I like it! I walked another short stretch of the Appalachian Trail, channeling Edward Abbey: “May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.”
